Treasure Island
I finished reading Treasure Island, and it was a fun experience. The book is about a boy who sets sail, looking for treasure, but in the crew are pirates that want the treasure for themselves. The book also uses terminology that is not present in today’s world but still is filled with adventure. Reading this book is not only interesting, you learn a lot about people in the 1700s lived like, talked like, and what their currency was.
In the book, Jim lives with his mother and father and they own an inn. One day, a pirate comes in and decides to live there, always keeping a box around him and asking Jim to look out for a one-legged man. One day, the pirate bumps into one of his former accomplices, which they seem to be very nervous around. Jim thinks that the pirate is after the box, because he thinks that there is lots of money in there. The other pirate stabs the pirate staying at the inn and runs away, and the pirate at the inn dies, leaving Jim with the box.
After talking with the sheriff/doctor, the doctor tells the squire, a rich man, about how the treasure could be of Captain Flint, an infamous pirate, the squire immediately buys a boat and a crew to set sail.
However, once reaching the town where the ship is, it seems that the squire could not keep his mouth shut about treasure, and has found a captain and a crew already. The crew set sail for Treasure Island, but it seems like some pirates are on board.
After almost reaching the island, Jim overhears some of the pirates recruiting men to help mutiny the ship, and it seems that almost all of the men are on board with the mutiny. The squire, captain, doctor, Jim, and some other trustworthy hands must figure out how to survive against this group of pirates.
I believe this book is very interesting and clever. It shows how people used to live, how many people and pirates think, and a lot of terminology about ships and the sea.
I haven't read this book yet, so ill have to add it to my list. I have always found books that capture how people lived long ago interesting, and based off of this post as well as what I have heard previously this seems like a good book for that.
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure my mom has a copy of Treasure Island, and now I want to pick it up and read it. I have never read a book with a plot like what you described; it definitely sounds interesting. Specifically, I'm wondering why the pirate told Jim to look out for a one-legged man. I guess I will have to read the book to find out!
ReplyDeleteAll my other siblings have read treasure island and for some reason I've yet to. I'll definitely have to add this to my reading list. The story seems to always have a new twist or turn to keep people occupied.
ReplyDeleteI have this book, and I've heard a lot about it, but I've never read it myself. After reading this, I am more intrigued about the story and I think I'll have to give it a try. It would certainly be interesting to put myself in the shoes of a sea-faring boy that lived in the 1700s.
ReplyDeleteThe 18th century world seems like very interesting place, but yet I haven't encountered a lot of content about this place. Treasure island sounds like a great work of historical fiction, and it will perhaps be my first taste of literature describing the world 300 years ago. I'll definitely read this book in the near future.
