A Peculiar Post by Rack
By Tessa
Hello!
My name’s Rack and if you’re reading this, it means that guy Jeff VanderMeer really did write that book about me. He’s calling it A Peculiar Peril, but really that doesn’t even begin to summarize what I’ve been through. Calling what happened peculiar is like calling Lake Michigan a puddle.
Anyways, he’s asked me to create a foreword to convince people to read his book. To be honest, it’s a totally bizarre story. You’ve probably never read anything like it. The way the whole thing played out was that my friend Jonathon asked my sister and I to help him organize his batty old grandfather’s mansion that he inherited. Sounds fun right - just being surrounded by cool old stuff for a couple weeks? So Danny (my sister) and I decided to assist him. And we go, and we’re having a jolly old time until one night we come downstairs to find a ghost in the basement. Jonathan calls them Emissaries but really who cares. They’re ghosts, plain and simple. But anyway this lady named Alice shoots a bear out of a gun, and that’s when things really start to get interesting. Danny and I get dragged through all these doors into another world and all the rules are different there. I am sick and tired of that place. If I hear the word wobble one more time, or if a talking carrot so much as glances at me, boy will I lose it. In fact, I lost it several times while there.
That reminds me of something you can look forward to in the coming pages! I sense some real character development in myself: from “the only logical person on the team” to “the only logical person on the team, but smarter and less scared”. Everyone else grew too, especially Jonathon.
So yes, you should read the book. If I had to describe it in three words I would say breath-taking, bizarre, and intriguing. Jeff also got stories from other people for their own chapters, so you get everybody’s point of view. (How he interviewed Ruth Less I don’t know and never want to find out.) But read the book, so you can hear more about me and my friends (and also quite a few of my enemies), and you can watch our happenings from afar with amusement and not terror. Really, it’s an interesting story in a unique place if you’re not the one in the demon pigs’ den.

I love this post!! From what Rack is saying, A Peculiar Peril sounds like an intriguing story. I also love character development, so I'm glad to see that this book includes character development for not only the main character but the other characters as well. Also, Rack's personality shines through this post, which makes me want to read this book even more. Again, great post!
ReplyDeleteI love this format of review. I think you did a great job describing the character's attitude through the post. The sarcasm and attitude of the character make the book sound very appealing!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great blog post, Rack! You say peculiar doesn't fully fit your story, but there isn't a better word for the semi-organized-but-not-really chaos that I can think of. To put it in the words of Alice (the Wonderland one), "curiouser and curiouser!" This magical and whimsical tale sounds really interesting, and, well, peculiar! I can't wait to read A Peculiar Peril. (wobble)
ReplyDeleteGreat post. I think Rack's personality really shines through in the words that he uses and the way his emotions come across. His exasperation and his somewhat condescending nature are very clear from this post. I might check this book out to read what other characters think of him!
ReplyDeleteWow! This is quite the summary! The way Rack describes the book makes me really want to read it. I look forward to finding out what the demon pigs' den is and how Rack evolves over the course of the story!
ReplyDeleteThis is an interesting format for a blog post, which works quite well. From what Rack is saying, this book seems like a really great read. I am sure all of the wacky characters like a ghost that shoots a bear out of a gun, or a demon pig, would be fun to read about. Ill have to try reading this book!
ReplyDeleteAs many people before have said I found this format of review to be quite exciting. I really like how the personality of Rack is transferred to the page, collected, logical, yet excited and somewhat arrogant. Thanks for introducing me to the book Rack, I will be sure to read it.
